Tomorrow sees the digital release of 'Mystery Pop' the new EP from the Alternative/Pop/Folk band The Beautiful Word.
Formed in January 2007 by front girls Emily and Megan, who began singing harmonies for each other's tunes – their twinkly pretty little songs hushed even the rowdiest of open mic nights. They have since grown into a big whack of beautiful sound with added punch from the noise boys – Nelson on guitar joined first, followed by Gruff on the drums and then Scotty on bass in early 2008.
Emily and Megan's harmonies on the EP are exceptional which even Simon Cowell would have trouble trying to fault. They have an infectious sound with up tempo rhythms soothing away any stresses and strains from the day leaving you with a contented grin on your face. Interestingly, although the EP is very polished and excellent quality they seem to have lost a little bit of the playful jollity present in some of their earlier songs.
The first five tracks are perfect little folky/pop numbers encouraging you to sing along and finish all too quickly.
The final track, 'Regal Tom'', at twice the length of the others is somewhat of a departure and my personal favourite. They seem to have let the boys loose on their instruments and the girls just backing soaring guitars with some 'Great Gig in the Sky' oooos and aaahs and their instruments.
All in all, a great EP from the Brighton 5 piece and, if things are fair in this world, will be snapped up soon by a major label.
